Tangier Island is one of the nation's most historic communities.

During his explorations in 1608, Captain John Smith arrived on Tangier. Since then, Tangier has established a rich history relevant to our nation dating back to the days of the Revolutionary War.  Most island residents are able to trace their family line back to the early 1700's,when Tangier first became inhabited. It is one of the last working waterman's communities in the United States. We are a cultural jewel and are listed in the Virginia and National Registries of Historical Places.
